10 Things I Learnt 10 Years in Business | Charlotte's Story | Article

As I reflect on the incredible journey of running BRIDGE for the past decade, I’m filled with a mix of gratitude, pride, and awe at how far we’ve come. From launching the agency with just a Women's board representing plus size models to signing the first plus size male model in the UK.

We went on to expand and launch our divisions in New York as well as navigating the ever-evolving world of digital media and opening our influencers and artist divisions, it’s been a whirlwind—and I wouldn’t change a thing.

When the agency first launched, I never imagined how much I’d grow—not only as a business leader but also as a person. I’ve learned countless lessons along the way, but here are ten of the most valuable insights I’ve gained after ten years in the talent management industry.

1. Trust is Everything

Running a model agency and influencer agency requires trust—trust between us and our talents, and trust between us and the brands we partner with. Without trust, you can’t build long-lasting relationships, and without those relationships, you can’t thrive in this business. The best part? Trust is earned over time through transparency, consistency, and open communication.

I’ve learned that the more authentic and honest you are in your dealings, the stronger your partnerships will be. And when trust is established, you have the foundation for true collaboration and success.

2. Talent Isn’t Just About Beauty

When people think of models and influencers, they often think of physical appearance or social media following. But over the years, I’ve learned that true talent goes far beyond looks. It’s about work ethic, authenticity, creativity, and a unique point of view.

The best models and creators I work with are those who bring something special to the table—whether it’s their ability to bring a brand’s vision to life, their diverse background, or their commitment to personal growth. Similarly, the most successful influencers are those who have built a real connection with their audience, not just those with the biggest follower count.

3. Don’t Be Afraid to Adapt

The world of social media, fashion, and influencer marketing is constantly changing. What worked five years ago may not be effective today. One of the most important lessons I’ve learned is the ability to adapt—quickly.

When I first started, our focus was primarily on traditional modeling opportunities. But with the rise of platforms like Instagram, TikTok, and YouTube, we pivoted to include content creators and social media influencers in our roster. What I’ve realised is that if you don’t stay flexible and open to new trends, you’ll fall behind.

4. Your Network is Your Net Worth

Building a strong network has been instrumental to our success. Over the years, I’ve forged meaningful connections with brands, agencies, photographers, and other industry professionals, and these relationships have helped elevate the careers of our talents.

I also learned that networking isn’t just about what you can get, but about what you can give. When you focus on creating value for others, the connections become genuine and the opportunities become endless.

5. Every No is a Step Closer to a Yes

In this industry, rejection is inevitable. Whether it's a model being passed over for a campaign or an influencer not landing a brand partnership, it’s easy to take things personally. But what I’ve learned over the years is that every “no” is an opportunity to improve, pivot, or try something new.

The key is to never lose faith in your talents and in yourself. Every rejection brings you one step closer to the right opportunity—and sometimes the right “yes” comes from an unexpected place.

6. Diversity Drives Innovation

Our agency’s divisions in London and New York give us the unique opportunity to work with a diverse range of models and influencers from all around the world. I’ve learned that diversity isn’t just a nice-to-have; it’s a must.

The diverse perspectives, backgrounds, and experiences of our talents drive creativity and innovation. Whether it's the cultural insights they bring to a photoshoot or the fresh content they create for their audiences, diversity fuels success in ways that homogeneity simply can’t. It’s why we actively seek out talent from every walk of life.

7. Self-Care is Not a Luxury

As a business owner, it’s easy to get caught up in the hustle and constantly put work first. But I’ve learned that taking care of myself is just as important as taking care of my business. I’ve learned to prioritise my health, both mental and physical, because only when I’m at my best can I lead my team effectively and give my full attention to our talents.

As women in leadership, we often feel the pressure to be everything to everyone. But I’ve found that the more I focus on my own well-being, the better I can support my team and clients.

8. Celebrate the Wins, Big and Small

It’s easy to get caught up in the pursuit of the next big win, but I’ve learned that it’s just as important to celebrate the smaller milestones along the way. Whether it’s a model signing their first major contract or an influencer hitting a personal best in engagement, every success is worth celebrating.

These small victories build momentum, boost morale, and remind everyone why they’re in the industry in the first place: to create, inspire, and achieve.

9. The Right Team is Everything

Running a successful talent management agency wouldn’t be possible without the incredible team behind me. Over the years, I’ve learned that the right people are your greatest asset.

I’m fortunate to work with a team of incredibly talented, driven, and passionate individuals who care deeply about our clients and the work we do. I’ve learned that you must hire people who align with your values and share your vision—and then trust them to do their job. Empowering my team has been key to our agency’s success.

10. Success Takes Time

Last but certainly not least: Success doesn’t happen overnight. It takes time, effort, and an unwavering commitment to your vision. There were times when I felt like I wasn’t moving fast enough or reaching the heights I had envisioned. But looking back, I realise that every step, every challenge, and every setback was part of the journey.

Ten years in, I’m proud of what we’ve built—but I also know we’re just getting started. I’m excited for what the next ten years will bring, and I’m more confident than ever that the best is yet to come.
